Why plastic free is worth it
Microplastics are plastic fragments smaller than 5mm; nanoplastics are smaller still, small enough to cross from your gut and lungs into your bloodstream. They break off the plastic objects we use every day, and we now ingest far more of them than a generation ago. The science moved fast between 2024 and 2026: particles have been found in human blood, lungs, placenta, and arterial plaque, and researchers are actively studying the links to cardiovascular and metabolic harm.
What the research says
In 2024, a NEJM study found micro- and nanoplastics in the arterial plaque of heart-surgery patients, and those patients had a markedly higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or death over the following ~34 months. · New England Journal of Medicine, 2024
