The plastic-free bathroom
Bottles you rebuy every month and synthetics that shed in the wash. The bathroom is full of easy wins.
The bathroom is a quiet plastic factory: bottles you replace monthly, synthetic fibres that shed microplastics every wash, and packaging that is a leading route for everyday exposure. Concentrated bars, refills and natural fibres clear most of it out, and usually work at least as well as what they replace.
Bars beat bottles
A concentrated shampoo or conditioner bar replaces two to three liquid bottles and ships in compostable cardboard. Prefer liquid? Refillable aluminium systems let you send the bottle back to be refilled instead of binning it. A single castile bar can even cover body, hands and more.
Tools built to last
A stainless safety razor lasts decades and takes cheap, recyclable blades, with no plastic cartridges to keep buying. Pair it with a shave soap in a wood or metal bowl, and switch your plastic hairbrush and comb for bamboo.
Deodorant and daily basics
Conventional deodorant comes in a plastic twist-up case you throw away every few weeks. A solid deodorant bar in compostable packaging, or a cream in a refillable glass jar, gives you 24-hour protection without the plastic.
Cotton, not synthetic
Synthetic towels, pads and rounds shed microfibres into your wash water. Reusable organic-cotton rounds, bamboo cotton swabs, a natural loofah, and GOTS-certified cotton towels and robes keep the soft stuff plastic-free.
Common questions
- Do shampoo bars work for all hair types?
- Yes, though there can be a short adjustment period as your scalp rebalances. Bars are made for fine, thick, curly and colour-treated hair, and rinsing with a little diluted apple cider vinegar can smooth the transition.
- Are safety razors harder to use than cartridge razors?
- There is a gentle learning curve, but using no pressure and a slow angle gives a close, irritation-free shave. The blades cost a few cents each and are fully recyclable as scrap metal.
- Why are synthetic towels a microplastic source?
- Polyester and microfibre textiles shed tiny plastic fibres every time they are washed. Organic cotton, which is what quality towels and robes use, does not.
