The best plastic-free coffee grinders
Burrs are always metal or ceramic. The hopper and the catch cup are where plastic hides, so these grinders keep beans and grounds in steel and aluminum.
Every decent grinder cuts with steel or ceramic burrs, so the plastic question lives in the parts around them. Most electric grinders feed beans from a plastic hopper and drop the grounds into a plastic bin, and static makes the fines cling to it. Hand grinders tend to be the opposite. The body is the hopper, and a lot of them are machined from aluminum or steel.
We checked each pick against its maker's own materials list or the retailer's spec table. Two hand grinders and one compact electric keep beans and grounds in metal from start to finish. The Fellow Ode sits in its own section because Fellow lists its load bin as plastic.
The Ode, with its plastic hopper
The Fellow Ode Gen 2 grinds through 64 mm stainless burrs in an aluminum body. Fellow lists the load bin and the base as plastic and doesn't say what the catch cup is made of. It makes sense if you grind for a whole household's drip coffee and accept plastic where the beans go in.
Brew what you ground
Fresh grounds deserve a brewer that keeps hot water on glass and steel. The Chemex and the Pure Over are both glass, and a stainless gooseneck kettle makes the pour precise.
Common questions
- Are coffee grinder burrs made of plastic?
- No. Burrs come in hardened steel, coated steel or ceramic. Ceramic burrs show up mostly on budget hand grinders, and they can chip if a stone slips in with the beans. The plastic on a grinder is usually the hopper, the catch cup or an inner frame.
- Which coffee grinder has no plastic?
- The 1Zpresso Q lists only stainless steel, aluminum and wood in its materials. The Kinu M47 Classic keeps beans and grounds in stainless steel and uses ABS plastic for the thumb stopper and crank handle, which never touch coffee. Among electric grinders, the Option-O Lagom Mini is aluminum and stainless steel with an aluminum catch cup.
- Is a hand grinder good enough for espresso?
- Some are. Prima says the Kinu M47 grinds fine enough for espresso and Turkish coffee, and the Lagom Mini is built for single doses at espresso fineness. The 1Zpresso Q suits pour-over, AeroPress and French press best.
- Does the Fellow Ode have plastic?
- Yes. Fellow's spec lists an aluminum body, a plastic load bin and base, and stainless steel burrs. Fellow doesn't state what the magnetic catch cup is made of.
