Safix Scrubbing
Coconut Fiber Scrub Pad (4-pack)
Scouring pads made from coconut coir fibers bonded into a flat 7 x 10 cm pad. Safix says they won't scratch delicate surfaces and can be composted.
Good to know: Safix (Inovex Enterprises, Bangalore) says the fibers are 'bound together with a non-toxic adhesive' and doesn't name the adhesive, so the binder's composition is unverified. Safix doesn't sell direct in the US; Amazon is the retailer.
Why we picked it
Safix makes these pads in Bangalore from coconut husk fiber, pressed flat and held together with an adhesive the company describes only as non-toxic. They replace a green plastic scouring pad for baked-on pans and cast iron, and Safix says they last four times longer than ordinary scrubbers and won't rust like steel wool. The coir is compostable. The unnamed binder is the one open question, so treat the compost claim as the maker's. A 4-pack fits under the sink in place of a pack of sponges.
