The best plastic-free dish brushes
Bamboo, beech and plant fibers like sisal, tampico and coconut coir. Most of these handles keep going for years on replacement heads.
Kitchen sponges and nylon scrubbers wear away as you use them, and the bits go down the drain. Researchers who abraded melamine foam sponges in 2024 found they shed microplastic fibers as they wore down.
A plant-fiber brush sheds plant fiber as it wears. Tampico comes from a desert agave, union fiber mixes tampico with palmyra palm fiber, sisal is another agave, and coir comes from coconut husk. Several of the brushes below take replacement heads, so the handle stays in use and only the worn fiber gets composted.
Scrubbers for the pans
For baked-on pans and cast iron, a coir pad or a dried loofah does what a green scouring pad does. Safix says only that its coir pads are held together with a non-toxic adhesive, so treat the compost claim as the maker's.

Common questions
- What dish brush has no plastic?
- Look for a wooden or bamboo handle with plant-fiber bristles: sisal, tampico, union fiber or coconut coir. The Greenth Pro pot brush is bamboo and sisal, and Iris Hantverk and Redecker make beech brushes with tampico heads.
- What is tampico fiber?
- Tampico is a stiff fiber from Agave lechuguilla, a desert agave. Union fiber is tampico mixed with palmyra palm fiber, which makes it coarser. Both are plant fibers, so a worn head can go in the compost.
- Do kitchen sponges shed microplastics?
- Foam sponges do. A 2024 study in Environmental Science & Technology found melamine foam sponges release microplastic fibers as they wear down, and conventional sponges are polyurethane foam with a nylon scrub layer.
- How do I keep a wooden dish brush from going moldy?
- Stand it head-up or hang it so the fibers dry between uses, and keep it out of the dishwasher. Redecker says the beechwood will darken with use, which is normal.
- Are horsehair dish brushes plastic free?
- Yes, but horsehair is animal-derived. Iris Hantverk and Redecker both sell horsehair versions; the brushes we list use tampico.
